A lot of cities and towns have signed an agreement to switch completely to 100% supply of electricity from renewables and some have achieved tremendous progress.
Over 95 cities in the world obtain over 70% of their electricity from renewable sources and efforts are being made to increase these figures worldwide.
It is highly achievable. The greater goal will be for the world to run on renewables.
The biggest argument on this subject is by those who believe the goal should be zero carbon emission and not 100% renewables. This is caused by the known fact that the energy from the wind are sun are not fixed as it varies. What happens when the sun is not shinning at night or the wind is not strong enough to power the turbines?
For the future of the young generation, studies indicate that we must put an end to fossil fuels within the next thirty years. The city of Burlington in USA and Basel in Switzerland are example of cities running on 100 percent renewable energy.
Nigeria is yet to bring down the cost of solar panels and this is not a good sign as countries around the world are taking this issue with urgent concern. A large percentage of Nigerians do not have access to electricity.
Let us all support this initiative by installing solar panels and inverters in our homes, offices and buildings as we try to go green.
